Red Lights

They met there at the same time every evening in the summer, when the children were away at camp, always sitting on the same stools, and Louis, the barman, would greet them with a wink and start mixing their drinks without waiting for the order. They felt no need to start talking at once. One would offer the other a cigarette. Sometimes Nancy would push the dish of peanuts towards him, or he would pass her the olives, while they gazed absently at the pallid rectangle of the televsion receiver set high in the right-hand corner of the bar. Images flickered across it. A voice poured out a commentary on a baseball game, or a woman sang. It was quite unimportant.

Lies Continue to Swirl

Lies continue to swirl around his eternal flame. It's time to dislodge his urn and cast light on a few men who attended his ascent and facilitated his fall.
They were rouge cops and shakedown artists. They were wiretappers and soldiers of fortune and faggot lounge entertainers. Had one second of their lives deviated off course, American history would not exist as we know it.

Tastes Better in the Dark

You've got to go through two doors to get into the bar. An outer door, down a short hall, then through an inner door. It's built that way so no sunlight leaks into the place. Sunshine never gets into the Regent. No windows, no skylights, nothing. High noon on the Fourth of July and the joint is as black as a mine. That way you can drain your lunch without feeling that you're a midday alky. Not that any of the people in the Regent are the type of people who'd let a little thing like sunshine or time of day slow them down. Booze just tastes better in the dark.
