Top of the World

The terrible thing about having New York go stale on you is that there's nowhere else. It's the top of the world.

The lights of the little highway town ahead spread with their approach and then scattered like flushed prey as they entered it's limits. Under the filling-station sheds swirling insects clouded the naked bulbs. The stores were closed, the depot dark.

And the walls are much too thin

Criss Cross

............  The dizzy feeling passed. A street car hammered past, nearly empty. A newsboy on the corner kept hollering race finals in the same tone of voice, as if he didn't even hope anyone would ever buy a paper from him. There was a crowd of young punks around a lamp post up the street from the lunchroom. While i looked at them one of the kids pushed another fellow a couple of steps backward, and they laughed.

His Blank Face

The Springs, the Summers and the Autumns slowly pass
And when old winter puts his blank face to the glass
I shall close all my shutters, pull the curtains tight
And build me stately palaces by candlelight
