This 1933 Pre Noir created some controversy at the time as, based on William Faulkner's Sanctuary, it contains a scene which depicts a rape. It had become lost for a number of years before resurfacing only several years ago. In the cinematography of Karl Struss it shows some early roots of a visual style, of what later became known as Classic Noir, starting to take shape quite a few years ahead of the acknowledged beginnings of the genre.
