Poet of the Damned


      ........ sense of impending internal catastrophe that distinguishes his books. We don't read them for style, not for what they tell us about the tougher neighbourhoods of Philadelphia that Goodis grew up in, but rather for a steady and undeniable emotional drive that sometimes handles language with something like hysteria.
