A great article by Jesse Sublett here , first published in Texas Monthly in 1999, which explains the early roots of Jim Thompson's own highly influential Hardboiled/Noir style, and how he developed it using his experiences as a young bellhop in Fort Worth, Texas. It is an essential read for any fans of the genre.
