Gothic Noir

The only film directed by Englishman Charles Laughton, Night of the Hunter is also the only one to be described as an expressionistic Gothic Noir fairytale. Based on the book by Davis Grubb it has possibly Mitchum's best ever performance as tatooed preacher Harry Powell. Shot by Stanley Cortez who did the likes of Magnificent Ambersons and Shock Corridor it's haunting to say the least.
