More Men Than Women

Roland Williams sat on a stool at the stainless steel bar of Soul House, his regular place on 14th. There were few patrons here but this was not unusual. It was a dark barewall place that served more men than women, and hardly ever did so in great numbers. It was not frequented by the hip crowd but rather by city dwellers who liked their alcohol and conversation drama free. The jukebox played cuts by the likes of Big Maybelle, Carl 'soul dog' Marshall. Johnny Adams and other artists whose sound had that below-the-Mason-Dixon-line vibe.

Back on My Feet

My brother's a machinist in a textile mill
And he makes more money than you ever will
He just got married to a Polish girl
With a space between her teeth

Get me back on my feet again
                                Back on my feet again
Open the door and set me free
Get me back on my feet again

Dutch Noir

Rising at 5am, he would write for an hour or two in the mornings before heading for his downtown office and churning out slick copy to sell Chevrolets, a task he detested. Advertising's 'cute, alliterative style' reinforced his taste for clean, simple prose.

The Loser

It was 4 p.m when Floyd Patterson got back to the camp, and the shadows were falling on the clubhouse, and on the tennis court routed by weeds, and on the big white house on front of which not a single automobile was parked. All was deserted and quiet ; it was a loser's camp.

Don't Know Why

                         Hooker on the corner
                         Waitin' for a train
                         Drunk lyin' on the sidewalk
                         Sleepin' in the rain

                         And they hide their faces
                         And they hide their eyes
                         'Cause the city's dyin'
                         And they don't know why
