You've Got Forever

You've got forever ; and somehow you can't do much with it. You've got forever ; and it's a mile wide and an inch deep and full of alligators.

On the Picket Line

Dashiell Hammett was allegedly offered five G's to perform a contract hit. It is most likely a mythic premise. He was a Pinkerton operative at the time. A stooge for Anaconda Copper made the offer. The intended victim was a union organiser. The stooge had every reason to believe Hammett would take the job -  post-world-war-one Pinkertons were a goon squad paranoiaclly fearful of all perceived reds. His mythic refusal is a primer on situational ethics. He knew it was wrong and didn't do it. He stayed with an organisation that in part suppressed dissent and entertained murderous offers on occasion.

Burn in Noir

You must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame - How could you rise anew if you have not first become ashes.

The Savage Eye

An innovative Independent 1960 docu/drama following a divorcee as she moves to L.A to start a new life and confronts the daily images of the impersonal city. Written/directed by Ben Maddow ( involved in Asphalt Jungle, Murder by Contract & Johnny Guitar ) and  photographed by Haskell Wexler and Helen Levitt among others. It is a stark portrait of one person's sense of isolation.

Stared at Her

I put a cigarette in my mouth and stared at her. She looked a little pale and strained, but she looked like a girl who could function under a strain.

Never Gonna Tell You

But nobody never gonna tell you the way
You gotta figure it out boys
And suffer the rain, and the fools in the night, and the heat of the day
When all you really wanted was for someone to understand

Trapped

Just a few more miles he thought. Just a few more miles and he'd be home, if you could call an empty room in a run-down hotel home. Just a few more miles and he could take a hot bath and drink himself to sleep.
