You've Seen Him
You've seen him I know. He's the guy who stands there, or sits in a scene, and never says anything. If you need five tough guys to sit in a car waiting to blast somebody coming out of the building, he's one of the five guys in the car. If some criminals are waiting to be tried by a judge in a courtroom scene, he's waiting to be tried and he always looks guilty. He stands by elevators, he eats lunch in restaurants. In westerns he is the guy at the end of the bar drinking rye. Once in a while he carries the rope at a lynching.

Louder than Words
Moments in conversation where a 'normal' person would express their feelings or be more extroverted are instead tension filled passages of silence that speak louder than words. With great use of subtlety the film does wonders in terms of depicting the main character's withdrawn mental state, but still visualising his thoughts and intentions without direct exposition.

Poised on the Brink
Poised on the brink of absurdity, or a kind of attitudinizing male arrogance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That which seemed fanciful has become an eternal and luminous lesson in how men behaved when they believed behaviour mattered.
