Things That Open and Close

It is surely this imperative to block the reader's access to the psychology of his characters that caused Thompson to become in his novels so preoccupied with things that open and close, lock and unlock - things like prisons, banks, safes, office buildings after dark, hotel rooms, people with secrets, oil wells, graves, briefcases, concentration camps, virgins, sexually promiscuous women, rooming houses, protection rackets, influence peddlers ............ pretty much anything to which access may be vouchsafed, denied or forced.
