Fall Into Place

The soft flat fingers fall into place on the buttons of the saxophone as if the generations of craftsmen in France had custom-designed the entire mechanism to fit Bird's hands. The cheekbones become prominent. The lower jaw is firmly set. The mouthpiece slides into the teeth and is held there like an object set in concrete. Chest muscles rise against the white shirt and the red suspenders.
