I have to disagree with this choice. Good movie but the competition is stiff. I would rate Body Heat and LA Confidential ahead of Chinatown. A sleeper in this category which has not received the popular acclaim that it deserves is Hustle with Burt Reynolds and Catherine Deneuve.
LA Confidential will never be as good as Chinatown just by default; Body Heat is a worthy entry; but Chinatown will always be recognized as the greatest in its genre.
