It's always been one of my favourite book/movies and greatly underrated in many ways as a movie in terms of the appeal it should have to fans of Hardboiled/Noir. Cool Hand Luke was published in 1965 as a Fawcett paperback original from ideas that the author Donn Pearce had while serving time on a Florida chain gang for a safecracking conviction.
Luke Jackson may be seen as an allegorical symbol with a similarities to the old fisherman Santiago in Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea and Newman plays the character every bit as well as those he did in The Hustler and Hud.
