Hopperesque

Edward Hopper must have watched a number of noir movies over the years as he soaked up the atmosphere of isolation which was part of daily existence in the big city. It doesn't appear that Hopper was a follower to any degree of what was happening on the pages of American pulp fiction at the time these paintings were created but they often evoke a mirror image of urban loneliness we recognize from legendary Goodis, Chandler, Thompson and Willeford novels and stories.

Hopper's people, rather like Vermeer's, are usually seen waiting- and we never know for what.
