Interesting. The diner has served as a popular backdrop to noir's existentialism. Difficult to describe why. Perhaps the pedestrian nature of the locale combined with the random travels and commingling of drifters, dreamers, and ordinary folk who are not that ordinary. Sort of an intersection of hard, cold reality, with lost dreams and every loser's lament that "I could've been a contender." Honorable mention in this category: Hard Times, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, The Sopranos, The Asphalt Jungle, and Mikey and Nicky.
