On Their Own

The feeling of hopeless perdition in Highsmith - the entrancing mood of the irretrievability of all happiness, of permanent damnation by way of petty complication - comes from the sensation that her characters couldn't explain themselves if they wanted to, and that their creator refuses to do so on their behalf. They are utterly, absolutely, on their own.
