Fever Dream

 

       His father eventually resurfaced and summoned the family to Fort Worth, where Thompson, then in high school, worked a string of odd jobs to supplement the family income. He spent two seedy eye-opening years bellhopping at the Hotel Texas - a fever dream of conjobs and cocaine, of pimping and peddling drugs. A few more roughnecking in the oil fields of west Texas. And finally, heeding the advice of an editor at Texas Monthly, he returned to Nebraska and enrolled at UNL.
