Voices Woke Us


       It was where we'd run out of room, where the dream had run up against the ocean, and human voices woke us. Los Angeles was the butt end, where we'd spat it out, our mouths tasting of ashes, but a genial failure of a place for all that.

      It is reluctant to confront it's ills and restless in its contradictions, a place for itinerant souls to barter and bid and, depending on one's luck, find sustenance, wealth or a glimmer of providence. That's when shadows shift and bodies fall.
