One Lousy Break
You know the vibe deep in your bones. It's late at night, too late for anything good to happen. Rain is falling slow and steady, like a heart on life support. Tired and bleary eyes stare out the windshield at the empty drowned streets of 3am, hoping against hope to catch sight of a lone figure in a black dress hovering beneath an awning, perhaps smoking a cigarette. Waiting, always waiting, hoping against hope for one lousy break in a too-long night stuck between perdition and damnation.

Rocks in a Leather Bag
Anyway this famous author said that men living in big cities were like rocks in a leather bag. They're all rubbed up against each other until they're like smooth marbles. If they stay in the bag long enough, there'll be no rough edges left, is the idea.
