How Close to the Edge

Los Angeles weather is the weather of catastrophe, of apocalypse, and, just as the reliably long and bitter winters of New England determine how life is lived there, the violence and unpredictability of the Santa Ana affect the entire quality of life in Los Angeles, accentuate it's impermanence, it's unreliability. The wind shows us how close to the edge we are.

There's a Guard

For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again i touch the green green grass of home

Memento Mori

Taken from his brother Jonathan Nolan's short story Memento Mori on www.impulsenine.com/homepage/pages/shortstories/memento_mori.htm, published in Esquire magazine, the haunting Neo Noir Christopher Nolan made as his debut in 2000 is still one of the best examples of the genre. One of the best reviews of Memento and the number of ways it can be considered can be found on www.filmsufi.com/2013/04/memento-christopher-nolan-2000.html

Permanently Hidden

Man cannot live without a permanent trust in something indestructible within himself, though both the indestructible element and the trust may remain permanently hidden from him.

Black Shape

........... first, there was nothing out there, nothing in sight there. Then, as though the street-bed were water and this bulky black shape were a grotesque gondola, it came floating up out of the darkness from nowhere. And then suddenly, still with no sound whatsoever, there it was at a halt in position.

Thunder Road

There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And i'm pulling out of here to win

Sketches of Night

'Hopper read Life and he smoked cigarettes. Though i couldn't find out what brand he smoked. This magazine might have been on his nightstand. The woman in the painting, what is she holding ? A pack of Luckies ? A wad of money ? Hopper's wife said it was just a sandwich'.
