1979's Onion Field based on the Wambaugh book recounts the abduction of two Bakersfield cops and motiveless murder of one of them. Directed by Harold Becker and featuring early James Woods it shows the physcological effects of long running appeals on the victim who escaped.
Becker later went on to make likes of The Boost, Sea of Love and Malice
