The scenes of hallucination on the detox ward and elsewhere are most disturbing. Billy Wilder's direction and Ray Milland's tortured performance with New York locations adding to the feel make it one of my ten best classic Noirs. The book on which it's based by Charles Jackson isn't quite Hardboiled enough for me although it is high quality.
