The racetrack has been visited as a setting by Bukowski, Jason Starr and others and now appears to have given us a novel which has elements of the carny part of 'Nightmare Alley'.
Haven't read Jaimy Gordon's 'Lord of Misrule' as yet but descriptions and reviews also remind me of Willeford's 'Cockfighter', Gardner's 'Fat City' and Tevis' 'Hustler.
