Vettriano

A Scottish painter obviously influenced to a large degree by the shadowy atmosphere created by writers such as Chandler, Goodis and also the dark movies we love.

I like bars just after they open for the evening. When the air inside is still cool and clean and everything is shiny and the barkeep is giving himself that last look in the mirror to see if his tie is straight and his hair is smooth.

Maybe this is the street you want. No your luck is running good but not that good. I think you hafta do more running before you find that street, before you see that lit-up sign, that drinking joint where Eddie works, that place called Harriet's Hut.

Shoot the Piano Player
David Goodis 1956

The streets were dark with something more than night.
